Some colleagues of mine and I have been kicking around a new approach to learning material in our fields (primarily IT Security and Software Development). The discussion started when several of us began preparing for an industry certification that requires a great deal of memorization. We're a bit contemptuous of this, mainly because we all have 10+ years of experience in the field, and know that most of the material needs to be retained until oh, say, the end of the test, and then is never used again.
We've passed around ideas on how to make the material more interesting, and while one of our ideas got alot of applause (Have the basic course material read verbatim by, um, adult entertainers instead of the dry academics who usually do it), I recently remembered some very successful experimentation I did in college with using hypnosis to enhance study. Despite the fact that I have yet to meet anyone who can facilitate my own entry into hypnosis, I was pretty good at helping other people into it (apparently, I have "one of those voices"). If retention could be enhanced, or the boredom alleviated (most of us would quite willingly sit like zombies for hours at a time if we knew we would retain the content)
Any thoughts on this, or persons willing to hash ideas or participate in some development and/or experimentation?
